Birthday Madness

My family is a bunch of birthday maniacs. We love celebrating birthdays so much that we have a calendar dedicated to marking each one. It’s like our own little holiday season, but instead of Christmas, we have “Birthdaypalooza.” My dad’s birthday is in January, which means he gets to start the party off with a bang. He usually requests something ridiculous like a cake shaped like a giant fish, and we oblige because, well, why not? It’s his day to be king of the fish cake.

The Cake Wars

Speaking of cakes, we have what I like to call “The Cake Wars.” Each year, my mom and I compete to see who can come up with the most outrageous cake design. Last year, I made a cake that looked like a stack of pancakes with real syrup dripping down the sides. My mom countered with a cake that resembled a giant pizza slice. It was topped with fondant pepperoni and everything. The winner? No one knows because we both declared ourselves champions and ate the entire thing over the course of the week. Birthday calories don’t count, right?

Surprise Extravaganza

My sister’s birthday is in July, and she’s the queen of surprises. One year, we decided to throw her an impromptu party at the local park. We showed up with balloons, snacks, and a boombox blasting her favorite songs. She was so surprised that she almost dropped her ice cream cone in shock. The best part? She had no idea we were coming until we jumped out from behind a tree and yelled “Surprise!” It was like something out of a cheesy romantic comedy, but hey, it worked for us. Plus, who doesn’t love an unexpected dance party in the park?

The Gift Gamble

Gifts are another big deal in our family. We don’t just buy something off someone’s wish list; we go all out trying to guess what they really want. My brother once asked for a new set of golf clubs for his birthday. Instead of just getting him clubs, I decided to wrap up every single golf accessory I could find: tees, balls, gloves, even a miniature putting green for his office desk. When he unwrapped everything, his face was priceless—a mix of confusion and amusement as he tried to figure out where to put it all. He ended up using the putting green as a coaster for his coffee mug because apparently, even golfers need caffeine breaks.

The Birthday Joke

And then there’s my grandma’s birthday in December—the grand finale of our birthday extravaganza. Grandma loves nothing more than a good joke on her special day. So one year, my cousins and I decided to prank her by filling her entire living room with balloons while she was out shopping. When she came home and opened the door, she was literally swimming in balloons—it was hilarious! She laughed so hard that she almost fell over trying to navigate through them all just to get inside her own house. Afterward, we all sat down and had cake (of course), but Grandma insisted on keeping one balloon as a souvenir because it reminded her that at 85 years old, she can still be surprised by her crazy grandkids—and that’s what birthdays are all about!
